Diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to the organization’s current and future success in engaging all individuals, households, communities, and policymakers in creating a more perfect democracy.
We invite individuals of all backgrounds, perspectives, and affiliations to contribute to democracy and make their voices heard through the LWV. Our commitment to celebrating diversity in our community is reflecting in the diversity of our organization, which enables us to advocate for our community in the best way we can.
History of the League
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit dedicated to empowering everyone to fully participate in our democracy. With active Leagues in all 50 states and more than 750 Leagues across the country, the League engages in advocacy, education, litigation, and organizing to protect every American’s freedom to vote.
Founded in 1920, the League was a merger of the National Council of Women Voters and the National American Women’s Suffrage Association. Referred to as a “mighty political experiment,” it aimed to help newly enfranchised women exercise their right to vote.
The League is divided into several levels: The national league, state leagues, county leagues, and local leagues. At each level, leagues share a central mission across different regions and communities. The League of Women Voters of Greater Los Angeles is a local league for the LA community.
