CHAIR: Valerie Morishige

Voter Service

DESCRIPTION:
The Voter Service Committee strives to empower the community to fully participate in civic life, with a focus on equity and inclusion. We serve the community through education, voter registration, and removing barriers to full participation in our democracy. Practicing people power, leveraging learning and the League's legacy.

OBJECTIVE:
This committee strives to empower the communities of Greater Los Angeles to attain the representation and legislation that we all deserve. Civic participation, which encompasses more than voting, is an opportunity to shape your city. Joining the Voter Service Committee helps make that process not just worth watching, but a model worth following. The League neither supports nor opposes candidates or parties—we simply make it easier for people to form their own opinions and vote for their values.

ACTIONS:
Greater Los Angeles is one of the biggest and most diverse jurisdictions in the nation and likewise there is a great range to the actions and responsibilities of the committee. People power and joy are our fuel. We aim to be: Trusted messengers – tabling to provide voter registration assistance and answer questions about the election process at schools, community centers, local events and more! Dependable conveners – our Candidate Forums provides the public a chance to see and hear from their candidates with to-the-point questions selected by community partners and the committee. Knowledgeable speakers – our Speakers Bureau connects with the community in-person or virtually to present information about voting, election, and civic life.

COMMITTEE NEEDS:
In order to stay a sustainable resource to Greater Los Angeles, the Voter Service Committee needs you and your friends to engage your community. We need people because, just like democracy, our power comes from our numbers and participation is what gets the job done. Teamwork makes the dream work! There are so many ways that you can volunteer! We would love to have you bring your interests, skills, talents and experience to our efforts. Besides our public facing opportunities (tabling, being a speaker, or moderating a candidate forum) there is so much to do “backstage.”

•  If the perfect pivot table brings you joy, then we have some spreadsheets that could use your love.

- Does looking up obscure elections and voting related rules and regulations get you going? Then we’ve got tons of research on races in our districts.

•  Are you the planner that can juggle 15 different things at once? Then how about becoming our scheduler for speaker engagements and tabling?

•  Does creating the perfect infographic delight you? We can use your gift in so many ways!

Writing copy, creating graphics, leading a team, designing merch, social media strategy, aligning with standards, and so much more. Whatever brings a smile to you is what we want to use to empower voters and defend democracy.

The League welcomes folks from all backgrounds (=link to LWVC diversity policy) and is focusing this election cycle on increasing language access. Every community deserves clear information and we want you to co-create with us what voter service looks like for the next 100 years. Let’s create a legacy we can be proud of!
