Criminal Justice Reform
DESCRIPTION:
In this committee, learn more about justice reform, participate in discussions about ways to improve public safety in the City of Los Angeles, and contribute in one or more of the actions listed.
OBJECTIVE:
The goals of the Committee are to research best practices (often through webinars, sponsored by local and national organizations), educate the public, and hold law enforcement accountable to their stated mission of “protecting and serving” the public.
ACTIONS:
One of the regular actions of this committee is observing weekly meetings of the LAPD Board of Commissioners, where we hear updates from the Chief of Police and monitor decisions affecting public safety. Additionally, members of this committee:
○ Observe the monthly LAPD Commission meeting and share highlights with fellow committee members.
○ Review articles or research reports on justice reform to summarize for this committee.
○ Attend an online webinar to bring ideas back to this Committee.
○ Make public comment at a City government meeting, e.g. Public Safety Committee and/or meet with officials to make recommendations based on League positions.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES:
○ Meet individually with Committee Chair, Carolina Goodman on a monthly basis.
○ Keep track of hours and tasks assigned/completed (Google Sheets).
○ Attend committee meetings regularly.
○ Research topics and write summaries (Google Docs), e.g. alternatives to 911, gun safety.
○ Observe local governmental meetings, e.g. LAPD Commission, Los Angeles City Public Safety Committee, LA County Probation Commission, Sybil Brand Commission (jail oversight).
○ Attend online panels and webinars on criminal justice topics, and write summaries.
○ Give short oral reports during committee meetings
